First time lucky at Leazes Park

Leazes Park Lake lies right in the shadow of St James’ Park stadium in Newcastle, and as far as carp fishing in the North East goes, it's the best there is. As I first learned to fish there when I was 10, I wanted to go back to try and catch a carp from there, and shoot a documentary about it in the process.

So I went up on Monday, did a 24 hour session and managed a 19 lb common which to be honest is probably my favourite capture ever! The fish was caught at 3am, using 15mm Monster Squid topped with a 10mm Tandoori Spice pop-up, with Monster Squid paste wrapped around the lead and hookbait.

Tackle was a 9 ft 2.75lb dwarf rod, 15 lb Hardcore line, 2 oz dumpy pear, Diffusion Camo leader and one of my "nailer" rigs tied with 25lb Armourlink. The fish was caught in a marginal spot next to a floating boom which cordons off a no fishing area from the rest of the lake.

Although the fish picture was taken in darkness, you can see from the daylight photos it’s a great looking lake!
